Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions can be helped by acupuncture treatment ?

Acupuncture, a key component of traditional Chinese medicine, is believed to be effective in treating a variety of conditions. Some conditions commonly treated with acupuncture include:

Pain management: Acupuncture is frequently used to alleviate chronic pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, and migraines.

Musculoskeletal disorders: It may help in treating conditions like tennis elbow, tendonitis, and joint pain.

Digestive disorders: Acupuncture can be used to address conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, and nausea.

Respiratory conditions: It is sometimes used to help with asthma, allergies, and sinusitis.

Neurological disorders: Acupuncture might be beneficial for conditions like neuropathy and post-stroke rehabilitation.

Mental health and neurological disorders: It may be used to support treatment for anxiety, depression, insomnia, and addiction.

Women’s health: Acupuncture is used for menstrual disorders, infertility, and symptoms of menopause.

Other conditions: Acupuncture is sometimes considered for other issues such as hypertension, fatigue, and certain skin conditions.

Is acupuncture painful ?

Acupuncture is generally not painful, but the experience can vary from person to person. Most people report that the needles are relatively painless when inserted. The needles used in acupuncture are very thin—about the width of a human hair—so they don’t usually cause significant pain like a typical injection or shot.

However, there can be some mild sensations during the treatment, such as:

A slight prick when the needle is inserted, but it’s usually very brief.

A dull ache or pressure around the needle site, which is common and often considered part of the therapeutic effect.

A tingling, warm, or electrical sensation that some people feel when the needle is placed in specific points—this is called "De Qi" and indicates the stimulation of the acupuncture point.

For most people, the overall feeling is one of relaxation, with no significant discomfort. Some might feel a bit of soreness or bruising after the session, but this is typically mild and temporary.

How many treatments will I need ?

The number of acupuncture treatments needed can vary widely depending on several factors:

Condition being treated: Some acute conditions might require fewer treatments than chronic conditions.

Individual response: Each person responds differently to acupuncture. Some may experience rapid improvement, while others may require more treatments to see results.

Severity of the condition: The severity of the condition can influence the number of treatments needed. More severe or longstanding conditions may require more treatments.

Overall health: Patient's general health and constitution can affect how quickly you respond to acupuncture treatment.

Practitioner's assessment: Acupuncturist will assess Patient's condition and response to treatment to determine the appropriate number of treatments.

Generally, a course of acupuncture treatment may involve anywhere from 6 to 12 treatments, scheduled once or twice per week initially. Some people may find relief after just a few treatments, while others may require ongoing treatment. The acupuncturist may adjust the frequency and number of treatments based on Patient's progress.

Does my insurance cover acupuncture treatment ?

Insurance covers acupuncture depending on the patient's specific insurance plan. Here are steps patients can take to find out:

Review Patient's Insurance Policy: Start by checking Patient's insurance policy documents. Look for sections that outline covered services, exclusions, and any specific mention of acupuncture. This information will give Patients a baseline understanding of what Patient's plan covers.

Coverage Limits: Even if acupuncture is covered, there may be limits on the number of treatments or specific conditions under which it's covered. Review Patient's policy or contact your insurance provider to understand any limitations or condition.
